Renew Achieves Platinum Calm Tech Certification: Learn more about Airthings’ First-Ever Smart Air Purifier

Research shows that indoor air quality profoundly affects one’s ability to think. Specifically, high VOC and C02 in indoor environments have been shown to reduce decision-making by 50%, with significant declines in cognitive performance per 100ppm of C02. If Airthings View Plus allows us to see the air, making what was formerly invisible visible, Airthings Renew allows us to do something about it.

Airthings Renew is an air purifier that actively helps people breathe easier and sleep better. Designed in Norway and inspired by the belief that fresh, rejuvenating air belongs everywhere, Renew is the latest addition to Airthings’ range of intelligent air quality solutions and an exciting, long-awaited moment for those who have hoped for a purifier to work alongside their Airthings monitors.

Renew stands out for its subtle design, quiet operation, and effective use of attention. With a matte gray appearance and a durable, audio-grade woven textile front cover, the device looks less like a traditional purifier and more like something that can be added to any room. The purifier's physical design allows it to stand upright, lie flat, or mount to a wall. And because it has been designed to be library-quiet, we can confidently recommend it as an ideal fit for bedrooms.

Beyond visual design, Renew’s functionality incorporates a 4-stage HEPA-13 filter that removes 99.97% of particulates, and a high-performance carbon filter that further removes gases and odors from the air. This means that the Renew can fully cleanse the air in the typical bedroom within 10 minutes, but is effective in any room up to 525 sq ft.

Renew features three running modes:

  • Silent mode, reducing noise output to just 23 decibels (about the same volume as a whisper) and dimming control panel lights

  • Auto mode, which uses the high-precision, laser-based particulate matter (PM) sensor to detect changes in air quality and adjust the fan speed accordingly, saving energy in the process

  • Boost mode, which runs the fan at its highest setting for 60 minutes - perfect for quickly cleaning polluted indoor air

Although Renew comes with a free Airthings app, it is not required in order to use the purifier. When we tested this product, we first tested it without hooking it to any external service and saw that it ran perfectly. We tested the effectiveness with two Airthings View Plus to see if it made a difference in VOCs in two separate rooms, and it was both quiet and effective.

Customers who want added trend graphs and a variety of other features are highly encouraged to download the app. Plus, the app allows the purifier to be operated from anywhere, which can be deeply useful for family and elderly care across distances, or in response to wildfire smoke. By setting a connected Renew to Auto mode, the purifier dynamically reacts to the air pollutants (like dust and particulate matter) tracked by the View Plus..

Calm Tech Institute recommends Renew for bedrooms, nurseries, and home offices, for households managing seasonal pollen or wildfire smoke, and for anyone who would like clean air handled automatically.

Renew is designed in Norway by Airthings, the Oslo company known globally for its radon and indoor air quality monitors. Airthings Renew is part of Airthings’ larger, green mission to reduce new-use plastics. Renew utilizes 50 percent recycled plastic, as well as packaging that is almost entirely recyclable paper or compostable PLA plastic.

Airthings Renew retails at $299.99 USD and is HSA and FSA eligible in the United States through Truemed.

Congratulations, Airthings. We're excited to add another Airthings product to our growing list of CTI-certified products! We are glad to welcome you to the CTI family!
