Purrfy Earns Calm Tech Certified® Designation

The Calm Tech Institute has certified Purrfy, a handheld purr therapy device made by Great Day Technology Inc. Calm Tech Certified evaluates products against an 81-point specification in six categories: Attention, Periphery, Durability, Light, Sound, and Material design.

There is physiological a reason people find it calming to hold a purring cat. Cats purr at frequencies between 25 and 150 Hz. The range overlaps with vibration therapy used in physical rehabilitation, and it falls within the frequencies associated with parasympathetic nervous system activation.

Purrfy is a handheld device that replicates those frequencies through sound and vibration. No cat required. You hold it in your hands or against your chest and it does what cats do: produces a low, rhythmic purr calibrated to the frequency range associated with calm and reduced anxiety. It has a gentle nightlight for sleep use and multiple settings.

The device was designed for children and adults dealing with anxiety, sensory overstimulation, ADHD, autism, and sleep difficulties. Occupational therapists have been using it in clinical practice as a sensory regulation tool, and some parents are sending it to school with their kids.

Attention

Purrfy has three controls, all on the device. A power button on the back turns it on, a second press turns on a built-in light, and a third press turns it off. Pressing the right eye raises the volume and intensity of the purr, pressing the left eye lowers it, and the nose cycles through the available purrs. Each unit includes three purrs and three sleep sounds. Because the user sets the level by hand, a child can turn the purr up in a loud classroom and down at bedtime without a screen or menu.

Periphery

Purrfy communicates through touch as much as through sound. The device vibrates at the same frequency as its recorded purrs, and the company describes feeling that vibration as central to how it soothes. It is meant to be held in the hands or against the chest, which keeps the experience in the body and leaves the eyes free for the surrounding room. The light is optional and sits behind a separate button press.

Sound

Purrfy's sound design works within the limits of a small speaker. Most speakers small enough to fit inside the device reliably reproduce sounds only above 200Hz, while a cat's purr falls between 25Hz and 150Hz. To reach those frequencies, the body is built as a sealed chamber in which a powered speaker drives a passive radiator, producing deeper bass at higher efficiency. The audio circuitry is tuned for low frequencies and drives haptic exciters selected for their efficiency in that range. The purrs were recorded from real cats.

Materials

Purrfy is 13 centimeters (5 inches) tall and weighs 120 grams, about the size of a coffee mug, and fits in one or both hands. Its outer skin is removable silicone, available in blue plus four additional colours, and can be washed with mild soap or on the top rack of a dishwasher. That makes the device practical to clean between uses in a clinic or after a day in a school bag. It charges over USB-C.
