Modos Flow Earns Calm Tech Platinum Certification for a Blazingly Fast Paper-Like Monitor Built Around Focused Work

The Calm Tech Institute has awarded Modos Flow a Calm Tech Platinum Certification. Modos Flow is an extraordinarily performant Paper-Like Monitor with an incredible refresh rate, making it suitable for any computer-related task.

CTI Partner Robin Moreau was introduced to Modos while still under development, allowing us to test the pre-release monitor and learn more about what makes this level of performance possible. We're excited to certify this technology. More importantly, we see this as an important part of a new era in display technology.

Flow is a 13.3-inch E Ink monitor that connects to any computer over a single USB Type-C cable. It renders text at 300 pixels per inch, the same density as a printed page, and refreshes at up to 60 Hz with sub-100 millisecond latency. Those number put Flow in a category that did not previously exist in a shipping product: an e-paper display responsive enough for everyday typing, scrolling, and cursor movement.

A More Comfortable Way to Work

E Ink stays readable in direct sunlight, so even on bright days, the screen doesn't go unreadable. Because the display is reflective rather than backlit, bright ambient light works with it instead of washing the screen out. That changes where and how you can work. Instead of spending all day under artificial light, you can work comfortably in natural light by a window. You can take a document outside and keep reading. You can write on a balcony or in a shaded outdoor space, and the display still feels comfortable and readable.

The screen is reflective rather than backlit. It works the way ink on paper does, bouncing ambient light back to the viewer instead of projecting light into the eyes. This is the same principle that makes e-readers comfortable for hours of reading, extended here to a full desktop display. In direct sunlight, the screen stays readable. Bright ambient light works with it rather than washing it out.

Flow ships with four display modes, each tuned to a different kind of work, with physical buttons on the monitor to switch between modes.

• Watching mod: prioritizes faster updates.

• Writing mode: minimizes latency while you type.

Modos Flow API lets users bind keyboard shortcuts to any mode, so the display adapts to the task without disrupting workflow.

The hardware and firmware are open source, published under the CERN Open Hardware License. The display controller is built on an AMD Zynq 7000 SoC FPGA that updates only the pixels that change, rather than refreshing the entire panel. This partial-update architecture is what makes Flow responsive enough for interactive work without increasing the total number of refresh cycles or accelerating panel wear.

Four major factors contributed to Calm Tech Institute's Platinum rating:

Attention and Periphery: Four display modes let the screen recede when your task calls for stability and come forward when tasks calls for speed, keeping the technology in the periphery of attention until you need it. A calm device meets the task at hand rather than imposing a single behavior across all kinds of work.

Light: Because Flow reflects ambient light instead of emitting its own, it does not add a light source to your eyes. The color model includes an amber-tinted frontlight with adjustable brightness for low-light use, but in a well-lit room or outdoors, the frontlight stays off. This is the opposite of a conventional LCD or OLED panel, which must overpower ambient light to remain visible. Flow works with the light already in the room. We score for flicker-free displays, enabling long work sessions without headaches.

Durability: The open-source firmware and hardware mean the product can be maintained, modified, and repaired independently of the manufacturer. Modos Tech publishes schematics, board files, and firmware source code on GitHub. Modos has already shipped the Paper Dev Kit, a developer-grade predecessor, to backers through Crowd Supply.
