Philips Hue introduced a set of three affordances that bring the digital into the physical world, using interactions humans are already familiar with.

This system made it easier for people unfamiliar with the Hue Lightbulbs to still use the lights.

However, as this system lacks physical affordances, like a light switch, it's difficult to use in the dark, or by using peripheral attention.

VII. Technology should leverage familiar behaviors to introduce new ones.

Technology takes time to introduce. Have a gradual introduction plan to allow people to adapt and accept new features over time according to social norms, and incorporate user feedback to accelerate usability.
