Automated pet feeders should be able to work even when the power is out with back-up battery and offline feeding instructions. PetNet provided a feeder that failed to feed pets when a remote server failed. This left pets stranded and owners panicked. If PetNet had a process in place for failure, they could have designed a resilient system that worked even when it failed.

VI. Technology should work even when

it fails.

Consider multiple stages to failure–from a usable state, to complete breakdown. Preserve the features that matter most, and include analog backup systems to extend functionality when primary power or connectivity is lost.
